Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Her mother was her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. In addition to working two part-time jobs, Scott took classes in secondary teaching in Temple University. She hoped to become the high school's English teacher. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. The path she took to her career started with a performance artist who spoke words who performed her work during poetry readings. Her next collaboration was together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Through a Roots show, she revealed herself as a musician. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway the musical Rent. She became the first signed artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
